Delivering first-class schools in Leeds
The Interserve-led consortium, Environments for Learning (E4L), has been awarded a contract to deliver the Leeds Building Schools for the Future (BSF) Programme, as part of a 10-year strategic partnership between Leeds City Council, Education Leeds, the government's Partnership for Schools and E4L.
As part of this alliance, E4L consortium (comprising Interserve, Barclays Private Equity, Mott MacDonald and Cambridge Education) will initially be delivering 16 schools with a capital works value of £290m. The contract will provide facilities for over 7,380 pupils and consists of; building five secondary schools (Allerton High school, Cockburn High school, Pudsey Grangefield school, Rodillian High school and Allerton Grange school), handed over in September 2008; the construction of the West Leeds and Wortley schools, operational since September 2009; and the refurbishment of five schools. Facilities management services including reactive maintenance, security, caretaking and cleaning, will also be delivered by the consortium and will run over 25 years.
This is the sixth project in the national BSF programme to reach financial close and is the largest in capital value. It has progressed rapidly – achieving financial close in only 14 weeks from our appointment.
Our services include finance, build, refurbish and Facilities Management services. In addition, we offer programme and project management, procurement and supply chain management, strategic business case development, installation of mechanical, electrical and public health services.
Sustainable buildings
There is growing evidence from the British Property Foundation, RICS and BCIS that designing to this level of integration results in reduced running, maintenance and replacement costs; better future proofing against rising energy costs; and above all, healthier buildings. Improved materials resource efficiency at every stage of the construction process through registering the schools on the Recycled Content Toolkit (RCToolkit), aiming to meet the Government’s target set for schools for 10 per cent recycled content. Also our BREEAM rating management helps shape and control the process of delivering a sustainable building.
Drawing upon our experience in building and maintaining schools throughout the UK, we are working alongside our consortium partners, to create exceptional educational facilities; this is a tremendous opportunity to transform the delivery of education for thousands of children in Leeds.
